Pigmented lesions are caused by an excess of melanin in certain skin cells (melanin is the substance that gives skin its colour). Some pigmented lesions are present from birth while others can be caused or worsened by sun exposure. In the past, bleaching products in topical products have been used to lighten these lesions but mainly with poor or short term effect. While initially, lasers and IPL devices were primarily used for hair removal treatments they quickly became adapted for facial rejuvenation techniques including the reduction and removal of benign pigmented lesions.
The light from the laser or IPL selectively targets the excess melanin particles making up the pigmented lesion, damaging these particles, which are subsequently removed by the bodies natural waste disposal methods.
Most superficial lesions can be effectively removed in an initial course of 3 sessions, although some deeper lesions may require further treatments.
With the latest technology available at our clinic treatment is now virtually pain free. We cool your skin before, during and after treatment to ensure maximum comfort levels and protect your skin.
Laser and IPL treatment for pigmented lesions is now very well established. Many thousands of people have been treated over the last ten years and as long as the treatment is performed correctly by trained professionals and you follow advice there should be no side effects at all.
Many pigmented lesions develop or are worsened by exposure to UV (natural or sunbeds). Effective sun protection methods after treatment will reduce the reoccurrence or the appearance of new lesions in the future.
